The Problem

The Problem

In the last 3 years of my 8+ years creative career, I came to the conclusion about the above statement. I’ve encountered many people who are passionate and want to build a creative career but do not have enough avenues to make it an economically viable pursuit .

The problem is in two fold. Firstly Africa hasn’t reached the maturity level where there’s a lot of capital allocated to patronising creative services. Domestic demand and value for the creative is still relatively low. This has a created a large pool of creative talent.

There are other parts of the world where the value of creative output is much higher. So the simple solution will be for the creative to position themselves to be available in those markets. But here’s where the second problem comes in. It takes a certain level of business acumen to market yourself. And most creative people are not able to do this work because it feels like a whole other career.

The Solution

The Solution

The solution in my opinion is also in multiple parts.

The solution in my opinion is also in multiple parts.

  1. Create an avenue where domestic creative talent can be easily accessed by the rest of the world. This creates significant value for both sides. Creatives get work, business get access to a diverse pool of resources. This what the main Oxygene platform aims to achieve. Connect creatives to businesses

  1. Train the creative to think like a business and give them the tools to operate like one. Business knowledge needs to be distilled down to the most relevant bits and made accessible to creatives. If the platform is us giving them fish, our community & training programs is the equivalent of teaching them how to fish. The goal is to not keep them dependent on a single platform but to enable them access better opportunities

  1. Creative diverse earning opportunities. Beyond the direct exchange of time for money, there are other avenues where creative talent can earn money. While there are many platform like gumroad, sketchfab amongst others that allows the creatives to make and sell products, they are not very accessible to Africa. We need to make it possible for creatives to create relevant material for the continent and get rewarded for it.

  1. Recruit, train and upskill; the proposed solution above assumes that the creative is already good at their craft and is part of the workforce. But there’s an even bigger need if we will succeed to help students and younger generation kick start their career. Our last initiative is a program to enable us recruit and train the future of the creative force through design internship program.

We will also use this avenue to upskill the existing member of the creative force who needs to improve and grow their skill.

This is a vision that will take year to realise. I believe creative skills are going to become even more important in the future. And equipping Africa to be able to participate in the global creative economy is a crucial mission.

The impact I’m looking to have is simple. Money in the pocket of creatives at the end of the day and an ability for the creative to keep the cashflow alive. In the future there will be a lot of ways to help. But what we need currently is for you to connect us to businesses who may need creative services.
